What happened to August? 5 Fact Friday for Aug 24th

Well, well well … I missed last Friday then I missed this Friday … so I think what we’ll do is add my image from Pieces of Me which has five subjects on it for Last week’s image first.

Let’s pretend this is August 24th shall we?

In Beyond Layers two weeks ago our assignment was Pieces of Me … and we were given specific things to photograph then report back for duty.

There were 10 items but I only managed 5 ….. however you never know, the rest will pop up somewhere in the future, I’m sure. This is why I will use this for my 5 facts for now.

I will warn you that as photos go, this was hastily done from capture to post processing. Some of you have done amazing things with your Pieces and I commend you.

My Fave Chair, My Mailbox, Currently Reading, Kitchen Faucet, and Fave Beverage – Coffee

For August 24th 5 Fact Friday

1. I look at my chair and am reminded it needs painting. A nice white should be in order I think. We were given two old beautiful folding Adirondack chairs a few years ago … so comfy and surprisingly this one is easy to get out of. By the way, I see lots of rectangles and converging lines in this image (will be refered to in Day 63 in BL on Finding Shapes) later.

2. Our mailbox is well, old, but it came with the property (we rent) and it has been hit with baseball bats and the like more than once while hooligans are doing their thing in the middle of the night but my husband goes out there, bangs out the dents, secures it back onto the post and puts it back into the ground. We’re still on a Rural Route which I love since so many neighbourhoods have community lock boxes. There is something comforting about walking to the mailbox and opening up the door to see what you get. Much of the time it’s filled with local newspapers and a zillion flyers … a few bills still come this way … and soon my Love Letter to me from me will be in there … of course I will have to take a picture right? The trees behind it are in a tree nursery and is ever-changing with the seasons and when he changes up the product. There used to be a whole bunch of bamboo trees there. I learned a lot about bamboo from that. The area I live in has a lot of nurseries, greenhouses and tree and berry farms.

3. I’m currently reading as recommended by Kim Klassen during our Beyond Layers classes ‘The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron’ … soooooo worth it!  I even started writing my morning pages. It’s incredible how they help to clear your mind to start the day. I missed two days this week due to out of routine mornings and family.

4. My kitchen faucet is just that, water comes out of it  … I hate my kitchen. When working in it … that’s when I so wish we owned our own home. Tired of working with broken appliances and no cupboard doors.

5. My favourite Beverage … – Daily it’s Coffee, any kind of coffee. There is coffee in that cup but I drank it out of view, time to go in for a refill. Love grinding my own … hazelnut this week which is a treat. And when I have the chance to indulge it’s a Toffee Nut Mocha/Chocolate Coffee based Frappe at SB.

So there you have it for Last week … I have so much stuff to add it’s going to take me hours and hours.  It will be interesting once it’s on here. Really … =0)

Till the next thought,

Beyond Layers – Catch Up on Assignment (Day 24 – Now YOU)

Beyond Layers Day 24 – NOW YOU ……. An assignment in Self-Portraits. I’m way behind especially since we’re at Day 60 now.

Wow … it’s been months since this assignment was given and I planned on adding my Self-Portrait long before now.  I was having fun with the camera in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago, … sitting in front of the computer … yeah, … this is when I decide to take a self-portrait? No make-up … tired because I should have been in bed actually sleeping to remedy that but no … I decide to take a picture.  It’s not too bad though … I left it at that and loaded them up another day.

Here is ME saying HI  to all my Beyonder friends … and the rest of you of course if there are any … (peekaboo … I am hoping my kids don’t laugh at me for doing this) … I just look goofy. One day I’ll take a better one but for now … this is ME being silly. And .. holy Cow! My hand looks really FAT! … notice I cut off my chin so you can’t see the four extra chins!!  LOL … sigh*

Love yas …  oh and I tried Xanthe’s horizontal three layout for this one and it worked awesomely!

Just Goofy Old Me … Love YOU

Having Fun with the Print Module in Lightroom 3 or 4

Oh my goodness,  I was having some fun in Lightroom with the Print layouts after watching a Behind the Scenes video with Kim Klassen and went back into it to see what I could come up with.

I have always used this module for actual printing but it is awesome to use as a tool for building photo layouts for your blog too!!

I haven’t spent enough time looking through my files to pick and choose what to bring into my Blog folder yet … it’s on my LIST of ‘To Dos’ believe me so I just used what I had there already which was a couple of my blog headers and my Vancouver watercolour pano.

So while there I figure what the heck, post it to my blog.  YOU can do this too with Lightroom 3 and 4 in the PRINT module. It’s very cool and easy peasy.

You can use one of the custom layouts to drag your pictures up to or you can clear the layout, start with a blank page, drag your pictures up onto it and by holding the shift key to constrain proportions while you resize them on the page, you can then move them around to where you want them to sit.

Once you have them laid out to your liking, save it by choosing PRINT TO FILE and it will automatically save it to a jpeg bringing up a dialogue as to where you want it to live for a moment. Remember to choose at least 150 resolution which will still give you good quality for the blog. Also I choose high for sharpening in output.  I just save to my desktop until I finished it in Photoshop unless of course a folder is set up for all the practice stuff in it already.

When you then bring it into Photoshop you can crop, add text, put it into another layout if you like and then save it to WEB which will bring up the web dialogue in relation to the size for your blog etc.

Here is my random layout for today reminding you that I didn’t pre program the sizes of the panoramas because they were already in my system.  There are lots of ideas for future layouts using this system. Kim has Lightroom 4 and I want to get that very soon, but I have Lightroom 3 and it works exactly the same in that version.

Layout using Adobe Lightroom3

Please feel free to email me with questions. This is quite easy to do and the main thing is to practice and have some fun. Added note: Place your images on the page size you want to use, where you want them to live. Once you have done this in Lightroom you cannot change their position in PS so if you are making something where you want to add text such as a small story, leave room for it while you make the template in Lightroom first.

Enjoy and have fun with this!!

Until the next thought …

BTS Five Fact Friday August 17th

Vancouver BC – My Home Town

My Five Facts for this week …

  1. I love COLOUR and I can get that through FLOWERS!! They make me smile and feel happy.
  2. I love adding TEXT to my images because is seems to help nourish my soul and perhaps provide more insight to my viewers allowing fresh thought and a feeling of wellbeing.
  3. I love STARS and this little set of stars that fit into this awesome jar. Doesn’t matter what form the star comes in … Sky, Star Fish, Star stickers, Star Shapes, just STARS.
  4. I love GERBERA DAISIES … favourites are the pinks … no pale yellow, no cream, no red … no … ALL OF THEM!!
  5. I LOVE my Hometown which is Vancouver BC …. I will never move away from here. It’s like no other place I’ve ever been and will always hold my childhood with memories of my parents and how dear this place was to them. This particular image was made looking north from the lookout on Little Mountain aka Queen Elizabeth Park above the flower gardens which lie in what used to be the CPR Quary. It’s a very touristy spot with a restaurant, a wedding chapel, the Blodel Conservatory, a beautiful set of fountains and gorgeous manicured gardenscape. It sits in the heart of Vancouver which some of the downtown is visible here. The North Shore Mountains house North Vancouver and West Vancouver on the other side of the Burrard Inlet. This picture was taken before our BC Place was remodeled last year. You can still see the dome roof below center here.

Five Questions

I was supposed to do this for July 18th but I didn’t have my Blog ready yet so here goes:

I took the most amazing class this summer over a period of four weeks and 16 classes. It was all about creating an amazing Blog … so that’s what started this journey.  It was way too short because we had the most fun with two amazing ladies who make everything they teach sound so easy. A lot of thought was put into this class, a pleasure to be part of and it was professional, genuine and caring because of Kim and Xanthe.

Here are my Five Questions answered. I was going to do a mock up in Photoshop but I’ve been too busy working on the blog to get to that.

Question 1:

What makes you happy ? … in 5 words or less? ~

Grandbabies, Beach, Cat, Photographing Everything!

Question 2:

Which talent would you most like to have? ~

To paint in watercolours. (thank goodness I can pretend in Photoshop) and I would love to Play the Piano.

Question 3:

Which word or phrases do you overuse the most? ~ Well up to about 8 weeks ago, I said “Someday” a lot!! I have decided to quit using that and replace it with “When“,  another is, “I know“, and one I hate using everytime I say it is “Frikin” … why I got onto that one I have no idea and I say Cool a lot … hmm, and ‘Just Listen’

Question 4:

What is your favourite movie or book or both?~

Wow, I love movies and books but don’t get a lot of time to read. I like a good movie first. I will say ‘OVERBOARD’ with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, I could watch it two hundred times and never get tired of it. Always a smile comes from that. I have many favourites for Christmastime, and love some great recent movies/book like,  The Help … but Overboard just plain makes me feel great.

Question 5:

If you could go anywhere in the world for a creative retreat, where might it be? ~

I just thought of something … revisiting my answer here …. below is my big dream however, while I was thinking about it longer and harder, I realized I had a wish in regards to this question months ago. I would love to be able to go to CAMP SHUTTER SISTERS … I longed to go last year. The fact that it was at the BEACH was the biggest draw. I couldn’t afford it though but thankfully, I was able to live some of it virtually through Kim and now Xanthe … which made it feel much more real. Such positiveness came from that sharing. Thanks ladies!!

It really is a toss up between two equally appealing to me, the UK or Australia but if those were not possible then my soul replenishing stand by would be the Oregon Coast. I have always come away from there filled with new ideas, a sense of calm,  and awesome photographs. It’s time to go again as it’s been ten years. Miss it.

So, that’s it from me. Thanks Kim and Xanthe.  I may put together something in Photoshop for this yet.

Until the next thought …   Love
